Transamerica Occidental was established in 1928 by A.P. Giannini, a young entrepreneur with a vision to provide financial services to the general public. It began as a holding company for the Bank of Italy (later to become Bank of American). In 1930 Transamerica acquired Occidental Life Insurance Company, which had opened its doors in 1906. The acquisition laid the foundation for a long lasting, strong company. Today, Transamerica continues to deliver exceptional products and services to its customers.
Transamerica's success with banking and non banking activities continued until the 1990’s when, under the leadership of chairman and chief executive officer Frank C. Herringer, the company intensified its focus on being an industry leader in life insurance, commercial lending, leasing and real estate services.
In 1999, Transamerica became part of AEGON N.V., a leading international insurance organization headed by Pat Baird.
