What is IS80L Plus Life Insurance from AIG

Posted in Life Insurance Questions over 3 years ago, 3 replies

I have a AIG policy IS80L Plus adjustable premium whole life with cash value based on declared Interest rate, it is currently 10 years old. My husband is the insured for 16,000 and I am a spouse 20 year level term rider for $16,000, what does this all mean? Should I be looking into additional insurance? And with the problems going on with AIG am I safe to stay here or should I look for coverage elsewhere? I am on a fixed income and can not afford my premiums to be any higher. Thank you so much!

Kim,
First, I just wanted to say that it is important that you and your husband have life insurance. However, does it make sense that your life insurance is adjustable? Is your car or medical insurance adjustable? Just like your home, you should have a fixed loan not an adjustable one. Whether or not you stay with AIG (by looking at how they ended up in a financial crisis I would be leary on satying with them). I have a 30-year level term for 350,000 for $40/month with Primerica. In regards to the savings portion, I am saving my money with Primerica in a roth IRA (average rate of return 10%). I would definitely shop around for a better deal for your life insurance. Is 16,000 really enough to lay either one of you to rest and take care of your debt? Just a thought...if you need any help drop me a line s130nn@hotmail.com

To answer your question completely there is not enough information, most likely you have a variable whole life policy, which means that the cash value and premium can go up or down according to market conditions. I rarely recommend variable life products because the company I usually write has a very good dividend rate on the fixed product, and I want my clients to be able to reasonably depend on the projected cash values to be available when they need it. As far as the amount of insurance being enough, that depends on your responsibilities and the goals that you want the life insurance to cover. Most likely it is not adequate. If you need any more help or advice feel free to contact me.
