When you have a child, you probably have had the feeling of wanting to protect that child forever and make every day of his or her life as comfortable and secure as possible. Sadly, we can’t be around forever to look out for them. Insurance companies cling to this fact when encouraging parents to get insurance for their children. However, it is also important to realize that getting insurance policies for our kids should not have to be on top of our priority list.

What, Exactly, Is A Life Insurance For?

There are actually a lot of people who are still in the dark about what a life insurance really is intended for. A life insurance is meant to safeguard a family or household’s main source of funds should the income earner die or become permanently disabled and incapable of working. Its purpose is to secure dependents who basically relied on someone’s earnings to live. It is therefore practical and wise to insure income earners or heads of families first before the dependents. One’s life insurance shoulders the responsibility of financially providing for the family or other dependents in the event of death of the provider.

Is Your Child An Income Earner?

If you’re thinking of getting a life insurance for your child, it is important that you initially ask yourself this question: “Does my child have an income?” If your answer to this question is NO, then it is not necessary to purchase insurance for him or her. Parents should always be guided by that question; otherwise, you will just be spending more for something that is not really needed in your situation, and the money that you spend for those premiums is money taken away from other significant things that you should have been spending on.

If Needed, Don’t Get More Than What Is Required For Children’s Burial Costs

Still, there are cases wherein it is rational enough to get a life insurance for your child; the most justifiable reason perhaps would be the possibility of his or her untimely demise. Should you feel the need to insure him or her, you can go for a coverage that would be sufficient for burial and funeral costs. Even in this case, it should still be kept in mind that you don’t have to be paying high premiums for this, and that it is still reasonable to get a term life insurance that is most affordable.

Term Life Insurance Is A Better Option

When it comes to our children, of course we want to give them the best. But when it comes to insuring them, we have to be wise and quick enough to realize what their insurance needs are, and what is most appropriate given the circumstances. If you have to insure your child, go for term life insurance. As much as possible, avoid the burden of having to pay more for premiums than what is necessary. Don’t be easily swayed by the agents doing the sales talk. Think hard about your purpose of getting a life insurance. Remember, it would be more practical to set aside the money for your children’s education or for an investment that will eventually yield fruitful results which your whole family can benefit from.
