Contingent beneficiaries collect on life insurance policies in the event the primary beneficiary dies within 24 hours of the insured. Otherwise they aren't relevant. If the primary beneficiary is deceased, the contingent files the death claim with the insurance company in lieu of the primary beneficiary.
