Less than 1% of Term Life pays a benefit

A great number of life agents quote an unknown study that shows the percentage of benefit payout for Term Life policies is low (3%; less than 1%, take your pick) . I've yet to see the actual study cited. Is this some type of urban myth? Where is the "study" ? How and by who was it conducted? I'd like to read it.
