I don’t smoke anymore, but I did for several years. What do I put on my application?

You are in luck. Life insurance companies look quite favorably on those who have been smoke free for a minimum of 1 year (the duration depends on the underwriting criteria of carriers). You can go ahead and list yourself as a non-smoker. It would help if you had medical documents to support your smoke-free status. Here’s another important tip. Shop for your policy online, because online agencies are connected in real time to life insurance carriers. They are able to match your requirements with policies from companies that look most favorably on people with a history of smoking. Remember to be honest on your application or you could face a denial of all benefits if your life insurance company finds out.
