Why would Mother in law having life insurance on my husband

My recently new husbands mother has a life insurance policy on him that she says is only to cover funeral expenses. He was paying it for her at around $100 a month. He doesnt understand that this is more than what she says it is. Can you explain what a coverage like that most likely is please.
