What happens if an agent cancels a policy without issuing you a new policy?

My agent tried to get additional insurance for me but the policy was denied. I had a policy with him but he apparently had me sign a transfer form, without explaining what it was for, which cancelled my prior policy. Now I have no insurance. What are my remedies?
