Fortis Insurance Company was the dutch umbrella organization for Benelux Finance Group Fortis or Fortis Banking. Fortis offered a wide variety of insurance and banking products throughout Europe. In 2008, the company accepted an 11.2 billion Euro (16 million dollars) bailout from the Benelux governments and when the company continued to struggle Fortis sold off parts of its operations, namely banking operations and some insurance operations. In May 2009, BNP Paribas, one of Europe's leading and most secure banking firms, took over Fortis Banking leaving Fortis insurance Belgium, now a division of Fortis Holdings, to develop a new brand name. Fortis Insurance is now being sold and marketed as AG Insurance. This brand became offical on June 22, 2009. Any contracts sold via Fortis Bank will use the BNP Paribas Fortis brand name.
