AIG stands for American International Group Inc. C.V. Starr is an American entrepreneur that founded AIG 90 years ago. He followed a predecessor company located in Shanghai China. It's been history from then on. He grew the company from being a small average insurance company to being one of the world's largest.
Recently, AIG needed assistance from the government because they were on the tip of the ice berg of failing. Good thing that the U.S. treasury gave AIG 5 year standby equity capital facility. Now they are getting back on their feet and trying to bring strength back in their company.
Outrage was trumped up by members of congress when AIG issued bonuses to some of their employees in the wake of the biggest recession since the Great Depression. The bonuses were contractual and it would have been illegal for them not to have been issued. Ironically, congress has recently quietly issued bonuses for its own staff.
